At last Mobile Number Portability (MNP) was launched yesterday, January 20th in India.
Everybody is talking about Mobile Number Portability (MNP). So what exactly is MNP. The convenience of retaining your mobile number even after changing to your preferred netw3ork is the specialty of Mobile Number Portability (MNP).
What does MNP mean?
If you are part of a particular network and you wanted to change to another network for reasons of your own, but thinking about it because your number would get changed, as you need to shift to a different network, then that trouble is now gone, because of MNP's establishment.With Mobile Number Portability (MNP), now being part of Indian Telecom system, we can change to our desired network without changing our number, so there wont be any trouble of giving you new number to friends, family and other business networking people.
Yes every time when you change to a network of your preference before, you had to change to the number given by that specific network, but now that trouble is gone, which is why Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is brought in to our system.
Recently with the approval of MNP, being brought tin to our Telecom system, all networks are bringing in ads which feature and urge people to shift to their network, at ease without changing their number with the help of Mobile Number Portability (MNP).
Idea Cellular and Vodafone India are among a select group of telcos making frantic marketing moves to make the best of mobile number portability (MNP), which allows mobile users to switch between service providers without changing their number.
Most operators, including market leader Airtel and Reliance Communications, however, have refrained from advertising over number portability as they don't expect any great impact from the new service.
Idea Cellular, which started the 'No idea? Get Idea' campaign to woo subscribers of rival telcos with MNP months ago, has opened a toll-free line to assist customers wanting to switch to Idea and launched a fresh television commercial

Things you need to do for changing your network through MNP, without changing your number:
- With MNP, porting only for mobile phones users, will be allowed. Those wanting to port a landlines number to a mobile operator in India, might have to wait for more time!
- Under MNP, the user will have to obtain a Unique Porting Code (UPC) by sending an SMS – PORT to 1900.
- After sending SMS to 1900, you will receive UPC (Unique Porting Code) as a SMS from 1901 giving 8 digit alpha-numeric Unique Porting Code (UPC) and UPC expiry date in MM/DD/YYYY format.
- This code, along with filled forms and valid identity proof documents, need to be submitted to the new operator.
- The process will take maximum seven working days and the subscriber will be allowed to cancel his request to port within 24 hours.
- But one aspect which will irk the user is that you will be charged Rs 19 for using this MNP service. But certain reports suggests that it is applicable only in Haryana.
- Another aspect of MNP is, once ported, a subscriber will not be allowed to switch operators before 90 days (minimum of 3 months).
- Number portability will be available for pre paid/post paid, GSM/CDMA Mobile operators of India which includes Vodafone, Airtel, Idea, Aircel, Uninor, BSNL, Reliance, Videocon, and so on.
- Once the new network is activated you can enjoy the new network with its tariff rates, specified to the particular network.
Advantages of MNP
- Subscribers can contact the new service provider they want to opt and get customer acquisition form and porting form from them.
- If you fulfill the eligibility norms, you will then obtain a 'unique porting code' by sending an SMS from the mobile number you want to port to 1900 with text 'PORT' followed by your 10 digit mobile number you want to port.
- Then provide duly filled porting and customer acquisition form along with requisite documentary proof to the service provider.
- Post paid subscribers are also expected to submit a copy of their last bill along with the form.
- You have the option of withdrawing your porting request within 24 hours of applying.
