China Launches a New Search Engine (goso.cn version 1.0)

The quest to build a search engine that can meet the needs of people, both in the public and private sector is a goal of many companies. Monday, December 20, 2010 marked the date when China launched their first State-owned internet search engine in response to the need to form an independent technological platform for its citizens. China’s largest newspaper, People’s Daily, was responsible for the release of People Search Engine, a comprehensive search engine that promises to rival even the commercial search engine versions that have dominated the industry for years.
The new search engine (goso.cn version 1.0) has been on a trial operation for over six months, during which time developers have worked to ensure that the new technology is beneficial to the 420 million Chinese internet citizens. The president of goso.cn, Deng Yaping, promises that the new comprehensive search service will provide citizens with strong features and capabilities to engage news searches, interact with comments, videos and photos. He wants to ensure that the citizens are directly benefited from the service, forgoing the need to market via the engine, as do commercial search engines. This will also help to improve the credibility of the People Search Engine since it has an altogether different agenda.
The launch of People Search Engine is a significant technological step for China, especially since the service is completely State-owned. However, by comparison to other search engines in the industry, it lags far behind its competition. The deputy minister of the Department of Publicity, Cai Mingzhao, feels that by approaching this challenge in a strongly positive way, their efforts to build a strong, influential and unique search engine will advance their goals.
The search engine also has plans to implement a mobile version of its services, although talks and negotiations are still in the planning stages.

Advantages & Disadvantages of Using the QWERTY Keyboard

Pronounced kwer-tee, refers to the arrangement of keys on a standard English computer keyboard or typewriter. The name derives from the first six characters on the top alphabetic line of the keyboard.
The arrangement of characters on a QWERTY keyboard was designed in 1868 by Christopher Sholes, the inventor of the typewriter. According to popular myth, Sholes arranged the keys in their odd fashion to prevent jamming on mechanical typewriters by separating commonly used letter combinations. However, there is no evidence to support this assertion, except that the arrangement does, in fact, inhibit fast typing.
With the emergence of ball-head electric typewriters and computer keyboards, on which jamming is not an issue, new keyboards designed for speed typing have been invented. The best-known is called a Dvorak keyboard. Despite their more rational designs, these new keyboards have not received wide acceptance.

Computer Advantages

The only real advantage the QWERTY keyboard has for computers and laptops is familiarity. Because it has existed for so long, it is the first method most people use when learning to type, and many are reluctant to learn a new layout later in life. Schools are reluctant to teach typing on another keyboard layout because most companies use QWERTY keyboards, and if students aren't comfortable or familiar with that layout, they might be at a disadvantage when looking for jobs.

Computer Disadvantages

The QWERTY keyboard was designed with the purpose of solving a typewriter issue, one that has no relevance with today's computers and laptops. More recent keyboard layouts, such as the Dvorak, claim that the QWERTY design causes a lot of unnecessary movement in the hands, wasting time and leading to greater risk of issues such as carpal tunnel syndrome. In one example, a paragraph typed on a Dvorak keyboard involved 35 percent less movement than the same paragraph typed on the QWERTY, which could represent around a minute of work.

Mobile Device Advantages

More work is being done today on mobile devices such as PDAs and smart phones than ever before. Most of these devices come standard with some form of a QWERTY keyboard---typically a bar style, a touch screen, a slide out style or a flip style, in which the keyboard is condensed so that each number has two to four letters. The only real advantage the QWERTY keyboard offers in this case is again familiarity. Most smart phone and PDA owners own computers and are familiar with the layout, so finding letters when typing a text message or email on a mobile device is already second nature.

Mobile Device Disadvantages

Because all 10 fingers are not used to type on mobile devices, the QWERTY has even less relevance. Most smart phone owners use their thumbs to type---a slow process on a QWERTY keyboard that wastes time. More mobile devices, including tablet computers, are moving toward touch screen technology, and keyboards are now emerging that make typing more convenient that the QWERTY, such as Swype, which allows you to trace out words by swiping your finger from one letter to another. As these mobile devices continue to advance, the QWERTY keyboard becomes increasingly more awkward and difficult to manage.

Advantages and disadvantages of touch screen

Disadvantages of touch screen

  • screen has to be really big not to miss things when pressing them with your finger: I only like HTC Touch HD, screen size wise, and big screen means increased size of the device
  • big screen leads to low battery life
  • touchscreen means screen can’t be read too well in direct sunlight as it applies an additional not 100% transparent
  • touchscreen devices usually has no additional keys (see the iPhone) and this means when an app crashes, without crashing the OS, you can’t get to the main menu as the whole screen becomes unresponsive
  • touchscreens usually have low precision, virtual QWERTY keyboards being one of the most annoying things
  • most user interfaces are not optimized for thumb operation, so a stylus in necessary, and this means using two hands
  • screens get very dirty
  • these devices require massive computing power which leads to slow devices and low battery life

Advantages of touch screen devices

  • big screen is ideal for web browsing, picture and movies
  • touchscreen gadgets usually have simple user interfaces, which are more intuitive (iPhone once again is a good example)
  • touchscreen devices have fewer buttons that might break after a few months/years of operation

At last Mobile Number Portability (MNP) was launched yesterday, January 20th in India.

Everybody is talking about Mobile Number Portability (MNP). So what exactly is MNP. The convenience of retaining your mobile number even after changing to your preferred netw3ork is the specialty of Mobile Number Portability (MNP).

What does MNP mean?
If you are part of a particular network and you wanted to change to another network for reasons of your own, but thinking about it because your number would get changed, as you need to shift to a different network, then that trouble is now gone, because of MNP's establishment.

With Mobile Number Portability (MNP), now being part of Indian Telecom system, we can change to our desired network without changing our number, so there wont be any trouble of giving you new number to friends, family and other business networking people.

Yes every time when you change to a network of your preference before, you had to change to the number given by that specific network, but now that trouble is gone, which is why Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is brought in to our system.

Recently with the approval of MNP, being brought tin to our Telecom system, all networks are bringing in ads which feature and urge people to shift to their network, at ease without changing their number with the help of Mobile Number Portability (MNP).

Idea Cellular and Vodafone India are among a select group of telcos making frantic marketing moves to make the best of mobile number portability (MNP), which allows mobile users to switch between service providers without changing their number.

Most operators, including market leader Airtel and Reliance Communications, however, have refrained from advertising over number portability as they don't expect any great impact from the new service.

Idea Cellular, which started the 'No idea? Get Idea' campaign to woo subscribers of rival telcos with MNP months ago, has opened a toll-free line to assist customers wanting to switch to Idea and launched a fresh television commercial

So here are the list of Toll Free Numbers which you can use to shift to that particular network

Things you need to do for changing your network through MNP, without changing your number:

  • With MNP, porting only for mobile phones users, will be allowed. Those wanting to port a landlines number to a mobile operator in India, might have to wait for more time!
  • Under MNP, the user will have to obtain a Unique Porting Code (UPC) by sending an SMS – PORT to 1900.
  • After sending SMS to 1900, you will receive UPC (Unique Porting Code) as a SMS from 1901 giving 8 digit alpha-numeric Unique Porting Code (UPC) and UPC expiry date in MM/DD/YYYY format.
  • This code, along with filled forms and valid identity proof documents, need to be submitted to the new operator.
  • The process will take maximum seven working days and the subscriber will be allowed to cancel his request to port within 24 hours.
  • But one aspect which will irk the user is that you will be charged Rs 19 for using this MNP service. But certain reports suggests that it is applicable only in Haryana.
  • Another aspect of MNP is, once ported, a subscriber will not be allowed to switch operators before 90 days (minimum of 3 months).
  • Number portability will be available for pre paid/post paid, GSM/CDMA Mobile operators of India which includes Vodafone, Airtel, Idea, Aircel, Uninor, BSNL, Reliance, Videocon, and so on.
  • Once the new network is activated you can enjoy the new network with its tariff rates, specified to the particular network.

Advantages of MNP
  • Subscribers can contact the new service provider they want to opt and get customer acquisition form and porting form from them.
  • If you fulfill the eligibility norms, you will then obtain a 'unique porting code' by sending an SMS from the mobile number you want to port to 1900 with text 'PORT' followed by your 10 digit mobile number you want to port.
  • Then provide duly filled porting and customer acquisition form along with requisite documentary proof to the service provider.
  • Post paid subscribers are also expected to submit a copy of their last bill along with the form.
  • You have the option of withdrawing your porting request within 24 hours of applying.

Considering Colors

When designing your website, you need to carefully consider your color choices. That’s because site visitors form their opinions about your site within nine seconds of first seeing the page. Your colors give some of the first visual clues as to the site’s content, importance, and navigation. Used wisely, colors group similar ideas together, express the values and personality of the website, and enhance any goods or services the website offers to consumers.
Some web designers like using five colors: three complementary colors, one contrast color, and one highlight color. Others focus on color theory, since whether your website visitors know it or not they have instinctive reactions to most colors in either a positive or negative way. For instance:
  • Red: Evokes feelings of passion, excitement, and energy; can also be associated with anger, blood, or violence.
  • Orange: Represents approachability, informality, friendliness; can also indicate a lack of discernment or quality
  • Yellow: Associated with sunlight, yellow is upbeat and optimistic; can sometimes be overwhelming
  • Green: Nature, life, stability, and in many cultures money and wealth as well; can indicate artificiality, decay, and toxicity in other contexts.
  • Blue: Elegant, calm, spiritual, and soothing, although in a negative context it can imply sadness or passiveness.
  • Purple: Playful, impulsive, royalty, and dreams; can also be used to indicate nightmares or madness
You also need to carefully consider your audience, since certain colors appeal to center genders, age groups, and cultures more than others. For example, men tend to prefer red and orange while women gravitate towards blue and yellow. Younger audiences like hot, vibrant colors while the elderly typically prefer more muted, sober tones. Finally, not all colors mean the same thing across cultures. Green may indicate money in the U.S., but in China a green hat is a sign that a man’s wife is cheating on him.
